Tainan City Leads 2025 Yuan Ye Architecture Awards Selection, Wins Six Major Honors for Sustainable and People-Centered Urban Design
The final selection for the 2025 Yuan Ye Architecture Awards began in late April, with Tainan City taking the lead and securing six major awards. Among the winners:
The Public Works Bureau’s Annan Childcare Resource Center received a Public Architecture Award.
The Jiali District Office’s Jiali Sports Park Themed Playground, the Land Administration Bureau’s Beian Commercial District Urban Land Consolidation Project, and the Tourism Bureau’s Hupi Ecological Waterfront Enhancement Project were recognized in the Park and Green Landscape category.
The Education Bureau’s Tainan Municipal Fourth Kindergarten New Campus Project won both a Public Architecture Award and the Zero-Carbon Sustainability Special Award.
Mayor Huang Wei-che expressed that the city government is committed to addressing citizens’ needs through sustainable, smart, and tech-driven governance. He noted that the Yuan Ye Architecture Awards—now in their 31st year since their 1995 inception—continue to showcase Tainan’s excellence in city development. The awards reaffirm the city team's efforts and support Tainan’s transformation into a livable city that blends history, culture, technology, and green energy.
The Urban Development Bureau highlighted that this year’s award theme, “Crossing 30: Toward Zero-Carbon Sustainability”, reflects a continued commitment to environmental values, cultural context, and global awareness. It encourages projects that demonstrate low-carbon living, smart architecture, human-centered aesthetics, and societal contribution.
Award-Winning Project Highlights:
Annan Childcare Resource Center: Inspired by the “Cape of Good Hope” concept, the building links the childcare facility with nearby parks and the community through green, open spaces. Its design prioritizes natural lighting, ventilation, eco-friendly materials, and preservation of existing trees to create an energy-efficient, welcoming space.
Jiali Sports Park Themed Playground: Features a nature-based play environment themed around sugar railways and local literary heritage. The design incorporates age-appropriate, inclusive play areas for users of all ages.
Beian Commercial District Land Consolidation Project: Implements sponge city and LID (Low Impact Development) strategies, retains old-growth trees, introduces layered native planting, and builds an ecological network with minimal environmental disturbance. It also integrates local history and community engagement into park development.
Hupi Ecological Waterfront Enhancement: Enhances the lakeside recreational system through improved circulation, habitat restoration, and eco-friendly, low-impact design that encourages immersive nature experiences.
Fourth Kindergarten Project: Holds a diamond-level green building candidate label. It includes a spacious courtyard, creative play spaces using mango trees, slides, tree platforms, and a looped walkway with varied topography. The design emphasizes universal accessibility, sustainability, artful education, and user participation.
