The Tesla Diner, designed by internationally renowned architecture firm Stantec for Tesla, has officially opened on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, Los Angeles. First announced in 2018, the project underwent years of planning before its grand opening was officially revealed on July 24, 2025, via the X platform.
Blending retro Americana aesthetics with futuristic technology, the Tesla Diner seamlessly integrates a classic American-style diner, an EV charging station, and a drive-in theater. Its innovative design redefines the urban dining experience and stands as a model of sustainable and creative architecture.
The opening of the Tesla Diner is not only a milestone for both architecture and dining, but it has also sparked broad social discussion. Tesla stated that the restaurant’s solar power system and high-efficiency charging facilities will significantly reduce its carbon footprint, aiming to set a benchmark for sustainable urban development. Meanwhile, local residents noted that the launch has caused traffic congestion in the area—highlighting the undeniable community impact of this high-profile landmark.

Architectural Design: A Collision of Retro and Future
The Tesla Diner features an exterior composed of two rounded, metal-clad volumes, drawing inspiration from the streamlined design of 1950s American diners while infusing a distinctly futuristic, high-tech aesthetic. The architecture firm Stantec describes the project as “a classic expression of retro-futurism.”
The building’s smooth metallic façade reflects the surrounding cityscape and is accented with red LED light strips, creating a nighttime visual effect reminiscent of a spaceship. The two-level structure is meticulously planned to accommodate the diner, EV charging station, and an outdoor movie screening area.
At the entrance, rounded corners echo the interior’s flowing lines, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces and immersing visitors in a seamless futuristic world. Two towering 20-meter LED screens flank the parking lot, serving not only as projection media for the drive-in theater but also as striking visual landmarks that reinforce the fusion of technology and entertainment.

Functional Layout: An Integrated Multi-Experience Space
The Tesla Diner is designed with functionality at its core, seamlessly integrating dining, charging, and entertainment. The parking lot is purpose-built for electric vehicles and houses the world’s largest urban Supercharger station. Some charging stalls are conveniently located at the front corner of the building for easy access. On the west side, the parking area is covered with solar canopies that not only provide shade for vehicles but also help reduce approximately 26.6 million pounds of CO₂ emissions annually.
Inside the diner, the first floor features gray cushioned seating that curves along the circular exterior wall, contrasted by a gray bar and ordering counter on the opposite side. Above the bar, blue textured lighting panels echo the stepped illuminated ceiling, creating a soft yet modern dining atmosphere. This lighting design enhances the spatial quality while subtly drawing visitors’ attention to the building’s rounded curves, reinforcing the blend of retro style and technological flair.
The second floor’s “Skypad” outdoor terrace is another highlight. Visitors can reach it via a circular staircase at the end of the ordering counter, flanked by displays of Tesla Optimum robots that add a futuristic touch. Along the glass railing, sleek white bar tables and chairs are arranged, with a central bar that continues the first floor’s streamlined aesthetic.
From here, guests can look out over the parking lot’s LED screens to watch movies, Tesla brand content, or special events—enjoying a unique open-air dining experience. The second floor also houses a Tesla retail area, offering apparel and miniature humanoid robot models, further strengthening the connection between the brand and its visitors.

The Tesla Diner demonstrates how architecture can serve as a vessel for brand philosophy while injecting new possibilities into urban life. In the future, it is set to continue attracting visitors from around the world, becoming a must-visit destination for exploring EV culture and retro-futurism.
